Breaking new ground onto the alt-latino musical landscape, Angel Garcia AKA SpiderMonkey, presents his solo project SpiderMonkey Beats. Frontman to Los Angeles based Mezklah, Angel picks up where Mezklah dropped off and leaps forward with a unique hybrid sound. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Garcia was immersed in the multi-cultural neighborhood of East Hollywood with influences ranging from Reggae, to rock, to his traditional Mexican musical roots. Angel began his musical journey as a singer-songwriter composing rock alternative songs in English at the age of 18. The end of the 90’s was a time of great transition during which Angel began switching over from writing solely with an acoustic guitar and his vocals, to also using samplers and drum machines to compose new material. In 2000, after joining forces with guitarist Greg Hernandez Mezklah was formed, leading to the release of their bilingual debut album “SpiderMonkey” in 2005. “SpiderMonkey” showcased a hybrid sound to the LA music scene and the world. Sergio Burnstein of the LA Times heralded the duo as “one of L.A.’s most powerful and promising alt-latino bands” and described their work as “original, imaginative, and gripping”. In 2008 their LP “Bestia Sonika” revealed a new phase in the duo’s journey as two new members joined in. Latin Music Artists Magazine described Mezklah as “….one of the most original bands to come out of Los Angeles Latin alternative music scene.” Another great time of transition came in 2011 as Mezklah disbanded and Angel moved forward. In 2017 Angel Garcia reached out to former members guitarist Greg Hernandez, drummer Matiaz Pizarro, and Bassist Juan Ramirez in order to begin rehearsal for a set of reunion shows in Los Angeles. Due to the pandemic at the beginning of 2020, all plans for any reunion shows came to a halt. Angel now lives in Northern California where he continues on his musical trajectory. Currently Angel Garcia, AKA SpiderMonkey, is breaking into new musical territories with his musical solo project SpiderMonkey Beats. Debut single release, Chakal, reveals a new phase in his musical evolution as producer/composer.
